EDUCATION EVENTS

SUMMER ART CAMP 2008

Camps meet Monday through Friday, 9 am – 3 pm.

Children must bring a sack lunch and drink each day.

Camps are open to children who have completed Kindergarten through fifth grade.

The cost for each camp is $145 per child* - see below for ½ day option.

Sounds like Music!

June 9 – 13

Your child will be exposed distinctive music from around the world from historic to contemporary, diverse and familiar and create their own unique and functional instruments. Campers will paint and draw, design and build each day while learning the important connection between art and music. Special guest Randy Howshaw of Hoshaw Fine Violins will show us the progression for making his instruments.

Cave Paintings to Billboards

June 23 – 27

Throughout time, human cultures have created visual public messages to record their own personal history. From the first cave paintings in Lascaux France, to large impact murals of Mexican artist, Diego Rivera and contemporary public messaging through graffiti and aerosol art, your child will take a comprehensive journey through art history and the creative process. As a group, we will choose a common message we want to convey to our community, evolve a design and execute a group mural in a public setting.

Express Yourself!

July 14 – 18* (Choose ½ or full day option for this week)

Masks in the morning, 9 am – 12 noon

For celebrating, scaring, hiding and general mischief making, we will explore the personal and cultural significance of masks, especially as they relate to a child’s individual self expression and heritage. A variety of materials will be used to create sturdy, multi-dimensional masks and body coverings/costumes. Children are encouraged to bring special treasures from home to add to their creations.

Acting up in the Afternoon 1 – 3 pm

Follow up with Theatre Educator from Iowa State University learning stagecraft, story telling and acting techniques. This camp, in its entirety, will offer a full range of opportunities to explore physical gesture, the dynamics of body language and a wide range of human interaction and personalities.

AM option: $100 for the week

PM option: $95 for the week

Full Day option: $145

The Masters’ Palette

July 21 – 25

This camp is designed for the dedicated young artist. A more in-depth approach on the foundations of painting, drawing, sculpture, collage and mixed media techniques will be covered. Guest appearance by Artist in Residence, Greg Fuqua will show the children how to discover their own individual expression. What is the geography of the paint palette? Moving value scales and edible color wheels will be used to explore traditional concepts. The Octagon will provide a sketch journal for each camper to use daily.

China 2008

August 11 – 15

Let the games begin! Join us for an artistic Olympiad to China and discover the fluid, cool magic of papermaking, the fancy writing of calligraphy from guest artists, and learn how symbols and imagery are used in Chinese painting scrolls. Each day new discoveries will be made about the art and culture of China. As a large group we will build, construct, and create our very own Great Wall of China in only five days!

REGISTER EARLY – SPACE IS LIMITED. 515.232.5331
