Life is ‘bout a Dream - Surrealism in Art FULL as of 5/29. Please contact us to be placed on the waiting list.

June 8 – 12

“A dream that is not interpreted is like a letter that is not opened" - a famous quote from Sigmund Freud. Surrealist art was based on dreams. Melting clocks, a giant human eye, faceless humans, weird landscapes--all of these were hallmarks of the Surrealist movement. In this unique camp, discover how artists like Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Man Ray, Rene Magritte and Joseph Cornell interpreted the world around them using found object sculpture, collage, dream sequence journaling and painting. The surrealists admired the artwork of children for its freedom of expression. Students will create their own fantastical world with dreamlike qualities each day through similar techniques the Surrealists used, as well as their own creative interpretations.

Acting Up! Theatre Camp FULL as of 5/14. Please call to be placed on the waiting list.

June 15 – 19

Express yourself while learning elements of stagecraft, storytelling and acting techniques from a Theatre Educator from Iowa State University. This camp will offer a full range of opportunities to explore physical gesture, the dynamics of body language and a wide range of human interaction and personalities. Each day campers will work on visual arts components and theatre arts to create and enhance their characters for their final performances. Creating props, set design, making costumes and make – up application will be covered.

Monster Quest FULL as of 5/26. Please contact us to be placed on the waiting list.

June 22 – 26

Monsters are supposed to be evil, grotesque, scary and disgusting creatures. The word originates from ancient Latin monstros, meaning “to warn”. Campers will face their scariest demons by learning about famous monsters from history and those from contemporary culture. Our journey will begin with looking at mythological monsters like Hydra and Minotaur, then iconographic monsters like King Kong, Frankenstein, and Godzilla. We will round out our week with more familiar monsters, like those created by Pixar animators as well as those from our own imagination. Campers will create an entire collection of mini and life sized monsters throughout the week using papier mache, slimy stuff, paint, plaster and other gooey materials.  This camp is not for the faint of heart.

The Artistry of the Circus FULL as of June 29. Please contact us to be placed on the waiting list.

July 13 – 17

From Ringling Brothers to Cirque du Soleil, this camp will highlight the significance of circus arts; the magic of illusion and performance and of course clowning around! Special guests from ISU Juggling club will teach campers how to juggle their newly created juggling props. Balloon creatures, colorful hats, creative circus posters, sculpted clowns, hula hoops and a one ring circus for the entire group will be created throughout the week. Mixed media projects will be created using a multitude of fun materials.

Once Upon a Time – Myths, Legends and Lore FULL as of 5/26. Please contact us to be placed on the waiting list.

July 27 – 31

Creating magical worlds is a part of the artistic experience. During this camp, students will be exposed to a wide variety of historic lore from around the globe, and how the artists created the imagery to interpret each myth. From horse lore, volcanoes, dragons and fairies, to wizards and the Brothers Grimm, the fantastical journey of creating our own legends will be made this week using stories, visual journals, mixed media projects, painting, drawing, printmaking and fiber arts. Each day  stories and art will be created, culminating in a collection of individual masterpieces to bring home at the week’s end.

Artistic Skills Development FULL as of 5/18. Please contact us to be placed on the waiting list.

August 10 – 14

This camp is designed for the dedicated young artist. A more in-depth approach on the foundations of painting, drawing, sculpture, collage and mixed media techniques will be covered. After viewing slides of different masters’ art work, campers will choose their favorite for an inspirational starting point for guided and expressive projects. History does repeat itself, and art is no exception. Campers will learn about the masters from the past, and more contemporary artists and art movements. The geography of the paint palette, value scales and color wheels will be covered using traditional and unconventional materials and methods. The Octagon will provide a sketch journal for each camper to draw in daily.
